109 National Championships are housed at UCLA. None so sweet as the one coming tonight as UCLA beat Mississippi State 2 games to 0 and came away with the first National Championship ever in Baseball.
The key being no steroids needed for this team. Just good old fashioned baseball. Some call it small ball. But this team did it because of the approach they all have as a group. The moving the runners by swinging and getting the bat on the ball and advancing to put runners in scoring position and score. The pitching superb. That two fundamentally sound areas with the defense being almost error free. They’re not the statistical champions. They’re not suppose to be this far in to the CWS. But UCLA didn’t listen they just played baseball as they’ve done all season and this gives coaches around colleges and high schools something to think about.
The home run is worth one. Powerball is much prettier and fun to watch for most. But once the power guys fail what offense do you have to speak of. In Omaha the fences are just too far out for anyone to reach. I know someone will reach it and hit some home runs in the future for the most part you can’t rely on a single swing. UCLA built by Coach Savage did the most with statistically the least. A huge boost for other teams that don’t have the greatest stats. It gives coaches and players something to train and work at. Just getting the barrel of the bat on the ball hitting to spots where the defense isn’t. Throughout the night UCLA continued to bang the ball through the middle and scored. Pitching staff was phenomenal.
So Westwood will gain an additional National Championship in the sport of Baseball. Mississippi State was the better team as far as stats. But stats don’t win Championships players executing does.
